Panic buying has led to a rise in vegetable and fruit prices in Taiwan. That’s as domestic COVID-19 cases surge to the highest levels since the pandemic began.
The Agriculture and Food Agency on Monday said that rising prices are due to contractors raising the volume of shipments to meet demand. The agency said, however, that people should not worry as there is ample supply.
The agriculture council says the average price of vegetables traded at the Taipei wholesale market on Sunday came to NT$33.7 (US$1.20) per kg. That’s 40 percent higher than the average price a week ago.
