Taiwan can get vaccines if China doesn’t block the way: Official

Mainland Affairs Council Deputy Minister Chiu Chui-cheng says Taiwan is able to get vaccines from abroad as long as China does not block Taiwan’s efforts. Chiu was speaking Tuesday as Taiwan faces the biggest domestic outbreak since the pandemic began.

On Monday,  China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said it will do its best to help Taiwan get Chinese vaccines but it had to “remove man-made political barriers.” But Chiu called China’s statement crocodile tears.

Taiwan does not accept Chinese vaccines and has even made it illegal to purchase them. During the current outbreak, however, some have suggested Taiwan import China’s vaccines.

Chiu says Taiwan is able to get more reliable vaccines faster from the international community as long as China does not block Taiwan’s moves. Chiu also said the suggestions made by some people in Taiwan do not represent the Taiwanese people.
