President Tsai Ing-wen says the government will reexamine its power supply and distribution. Tsai was speaking Tuesday morning while inspecting the Central Epidemic Command Center.
The president made the statement after two power outages in five days; one happened last Thursday, the other on Monday.
Tsai said the power outages are “perhaps due to human factors”. But she said the government needs to reexamine its power supply as extreme weather and a booming economy will be a challenge to Taiwan’s power grid.
President Tsai also apologized to the public for the power outages, saying that she, like the general public, found it hard to accept.
Rising temperatures in recent days have triggered an unexpected surge in electricity demand. The Cabinet has ordered Taipower to submit an improvement plan within a week.
