321 new local COVID cases on Sat.; 400 cases added to week's total

Taiwan saw 321 new domestic and two imported cases of COVID-19 on Saturday. Two people also died from the coronavirus. 

Officials also worked overnight to deal with a backlog in reporting cases. They adjusted the daily totals from the past week, adding an additional 400 new local cases. That brings the weekly total for Taiwan to 2,365 local cases. The CECC says the newly added 400 cases were infected between May 7 and May 20. Of these cases, 185 are men and 215 are women.

The newly adjusted daily totals for the past week are as follows: 

5/16  206 -> 245 cases

5/17  333 -> 406 cases

5/18  240 -> 325 cases

5/19  267 -> 359 cases

5/20  286 -> 360 cases

5/21  312 -> 349 cases

5/22  321 cases

The 721 cases announced on Saturday (including both new cases and the backlog of 400 cases added to previous days) contracted the virus between May 7 and May 21. Most of these new cases announced on Saturday are in the greater Taipei area in northern Taiwan. The totals are as follows: 

New Taipei City: 384 (103 in Banqiao District)

Taipei City: 269 (174 in Wanhua District)

Taoyuan City: 20

Taichung City: 11

Keelung City: 9

Pingtung County: 5

Changhua County: 4

Kaohsiung City: 4

Yilan County: 3

Hsinchu City: 3

Hualien County: 3

Hsinchu County: 2

Tainan City: 1

Miaoli County: 1

Nantou County: 1

Yunlin County: 1 

 

The 721 local cases announced on Saturday include 258 cases connected to the Wanhua cluster. A total of 100 are related to tea parlors (adult entertainment), four to a social club, three to a fruit business, and 80 have other known sources. The rest of the cases are still under investigation. 

The two patients who died include case number 3,097 who is a man in his 80s. He experienced serious symptoms on May 19 and died the next day. He was identified as a COVID-19 patient on Saturday. He did not have any contact history with a current patient. 

The other patient who died is case number 3,553 who is a man in his 70s. He had contact history with a patient and was quarantined on May 18. He went to the hospital to be tested on May 19 and did not have any symptoms at the time. But on May 21, family members discovered that he had passed away. He was confirmed to have COVID-19 on Saturday. 

Taiwan now has a total of 2,701 domestic cases and 1,108 imported cases, 36 from a navy ship, two from an aircraft, one with an unknown source and 14 that are still under investigation. Of the confirmed cases, 17 have died.
