LEVEL 3 ALERT extended to June 14; 281 new local cases, 261 backlogged cases

Taiwan is extending its COVID-19 Level 3 Alert to June 14. That was the word from the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Tuesday. All schools and daycare centers will also be closed until June 14.  There will also be no graduation ceremonies except for those online.

Taiwan reported 281 new local cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday and two imported cases. The CECC also announced an additional 261 backlogged cases from earlier in the week.

Taiwan also reported six more deaths from the virus, bringing the death toll to 35. The deceased include five men and one woman, all above the age of 60. At least five of them had pre-existing conditions.

The cases announced on Tuesday contracted COVID-19 from May 2 - May 24. There are 306 male patients and 236 female patients.

The majority of the cases continue to be in the greater Taipei area in northern Taiwan. Of the 542 domestic cases announced on Tuesday, the total by city and county are as follows:

Taoyuan City: 21

Changhua County: 13 

Keelung City: 13

Taichung City: 10

Tainan City: 10

Yilan County: 8

Hsinchu City: 4

Pingtung County: 4

Kaohsiung City: 3

Taitung County: 2

Miaoli County: 2

Hsinchu County: 1

Yunlin County: 1

Hualien County: 1


Of the cluster outbreaks, 186 of the cases announced on Tuesday had visited the Wanhua District, 28 were related to tea parlors (adult entertainment venues), 2 related to the Lion’s Club, and 7 to a fruit stand. Of the cases announced on Tuesday, 122 were from known sources, 111 from unknown sources and 86 are still being investigated. 

Since the pandemic began in December 2019, Taiwan has reported 5,456 cases. Among them, 4,285 are local ones and 1,118 are imported ones.
