The government says it will fully support the normal operation of the semiconductor industry amid Taiwan’s biggest-yet outbreak of COVID-19.
Taiwan has a 55% market share of global chip manufacturing and 92% of the world’s most advanced chips. Taiwan’s recent outbreak, coupled with power and water supply issues, has drawn global concern over the reliability of its semiconductor industry.
Taiwan Institute of Economic Research researcher Liu Pei-cheng said on Wednesday that the government already announced that it will fully support the normal operations of key industries in the global supply chain. She said that factories have already prepared for the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Liu said that high-tech factories have been using measures such as staggering work shifts and avoiding inter-district transfer of personnel to make sure that production is not disrupted by the outbreak.
Liu says that government support for the semiconductor industry would continue even in the event of a lockdown. Liu said she is confident that Taiwan’s factories will be able to maintain normal operations and demonstrate Taiwan’s resilience during this outbreak.
