The United States and European Union included discussion of Taiwan’s inclusion in international organizations during consultations held Wednesday.
The consultations took place in Brussels between European External Action Service Secretary General Stefano Sannino and US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman. The two diplomats discussed a range of foreign policy issues, including those relating to China and Taiwan. According to a joint press release, “the diplomats held the first high-level meeting of the EU-US dialogue on China.”
Discussion included the importance of Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations, including the WHO and World Health Assembly.
The joint press release also says that the two diplomats reaffirmed the nature of EU and US relations with China as “multifaceted” and including “elements of cooperation, competition, and systemic rivalry”. Topics of discussion about China included repression in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong, China’s use of economic coercion and disinformation, and regional security issues including the situation in the South China Sea.
