COVID-19: Taiwan reports 266 new domestic, 89 backlogged cases on Sunday

Taiwan reported 266 new domestic cases of COVID-19 and 89 backlogged cases for a total of 355 cases announced on Sunday.  The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) also announced 11 deaths. 

The 266 new cases include 123 men and 143 women who contracted the virus between May 14-29.  

Of the 89 backlogged cases, 42 were men while 47 were women. They contracted the disease between May 13-27. 

Taiwan also reported 11 more deaths from the virus, bringing the death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 110. The deceased include 9 men and 2 women aged in their 50s-80s. They were confirmed to have the virus between May 16-28 and died between May 24-29. 

Of the 355 new local cases announced on Sunday, the majority were in the Greater Taipei area. The totals by city and county are as follows: 

New Taipei City: 193

Taipei City: 85

Taoyuan City: 24

Taichung City: 9

Changhua County: 9

Miaoli County: 9

Keelung City: 8

Hualien County: 6

Nantou County: 4

Chiayi County: 3

Lienchiang County: 1

Taitung County: 1

Yilan County: 1

Hsinchu City: 1

Kaohsiung City: 1

As for the transmission source of the 355 local cases announced on Sunday, 20 had a travel history to Taipei’s Wanhua District and one case is connected to tea parlors (adult entertainment venues). A specific source of transmission is known for 118 cases, the source is unknown for 47, and 169 cases are still under investigation. 

Taiwan’s total number of COVID-19 cases to date is 8,160 including 1,133 imported and 6,974 domestic cases. Another 53 cases are connected to a Navy ship, a plane, or have an unclear origin.
