COVID-19 (5/31): Taiwan reports 274 new domestic, 73 backlogged cases

Taiwan reported 274 new domestic cases of COVID-19, four imported cases, and 73 backlogged cases for a total of 351 cases announced on Monday. The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) says 15 more people have died, bringing the total number of deaths since the pandemic began to 124. 

The 274 new domestic cases include 129 men and 145 women who began exhibiting symptoms between April 29 and May 30.  

Of the 73 backlogged cases, 36 were men while 37 were women. They began exhibiting symptoms between May 14 and May 29. 

The 15 newly reported deaths include nine men and six women aged in their 60s-90s. They were confirmed to have the virus between May 17-30 and died between May 21-29. 

Of the 347 new local cases announced on Monday (including the backlogged cases), the majority were in the Greater Taipei area. The totals by city and county are as follows: 

New Taipei City: 171

Taipei City: 122

Taoyuan City: 27

Changhua County: 10

Taichung City: 5

Keelung City: 5

Miaoli County: 5

Hsinchu City: 2

Hualien County: 1

Penghu: 1

Kaohsiung City: 1

Hsinchu County: 1

As for the transmission source of the 347 local cases announced on Monday, 293 had a travel history to Greater Taipei. Of the 54 others, two had a travel history to the original hotspot of Wanhua District in Taipei, and 46 have another known source of transmission. Six have an unknown source of transmission. 

Taiwan’s total number of COVID-19 cases to date is 8,511, including 1,137 imported and 7,321 domestic cases. Another 53 cases are connected to a Navy ship, a plane, or have an unclear origin.
