The legislature is set to call an extraordinary session next Tuesday to review an economic stimulus budget. On Monday, it approved a proposed amendment to double the cap on a special budget for relief measures to NT$840 billion (US$30.37 billion).

The Cabinet is set to pass the budget on Thursday before submitting it to the legislature for review.

Ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) caucus whip Liu Shyh-fang said on Tuesday she hopes that ruling and opposition parties can reach a consensus for the sake of the public.

New Power Party and Taiwan People’s Party have both agreed to the DPP’s plan to call an extraordinary session. They said that vaccine purchases will be the focus of the review. KMT, another opposition party, said the timing of the session should be discussed since Taiwan is still under a Level 3 COVID Alert.

Under the DPP’s preliminary plan, the legislature will invite Premier Su Tseng-chang to give a report next Tuesday before the budget goes under review from June 9th to 11th. The DPP hopes the budget will pass its third reading on June 18th at the earliest.
