An official from the Pacific Island nation the Solomon Islands is in Taiwan to receive medical treatment despite Chinese objections.

The Solomon Islands broke off diplomatic ties with Taiwan in 2019 and subsequently recognized Beijing. However, the premier of the country’s Malaita Province, Daniel Suidani, has remained friendly towards Taiwan, opposing Chinese investment in his province.

Suidani fell ill last year, but local doctors have been unable to pin down the cause. He later sought and received permission to travel to Taiwan to get a diagnosis and treatment.

Suidani arrived in Taiwan on May 26, and will complete a 14-day COVID-19 quarantine before his medical examination. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Joanne Ou says the foreign ministry is happy to see Sudani’s affirmation of the quality care Taiwan’s medical system provides.

Meanwhile, a member of Suidani’s staff has expressed regret at Chinese opposition to Suidani’s trip.
