Local media reports are saying that the United States is sending the US Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) to Taiwan for the first time for exchanges with Taiwan’s special forces.
When asked about the presence of MARSOC in Taiwan at a press conference on Tuesday, US Department of Defense Spokesperson John Kirby did not respond directly to the question. But he did say that the US is obligated to help Taiwan’s self defense according to the Taiwan Relations Act.
The reports are saying that after Taiwan’s 37th Han Kuang exercises, the US will be sending military forces to Taiwan for training. Taiwan’s defense ministry said on Wednesday that the military is trying to train its defense to prevent a war. It said that related exercises are aimed at this goal, and that the public should not engage in speculation.
