Premier Su Tseng-chang says Taiwan will have 10 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines by the end of August. Su was speaking at the legislature on Tuesday.
The doses include the ones purchased through the global vaccination distribution initiative COVAX and locally-manufactured vaccines. In May, Taiwan signed contracts to purchase 5 million doses each from two local biotech companies.
Su told lawmakers that the government has already mapped out a mass vaccination scheme.
He said Taiwan has received 2.11 million doses from abroad. The third batch of AstraZeneca vaccines, amounting to 410,000 doses, has been distributed and Taiwan will begin using its 150,000 Moderna doses on Wednesday.
Su also said the 1.24 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines donated by Japan will be ready for use after safety checks on Friday. On Sunday, the United States also announced its decision to donate 750,000 doses of vaccines to Taiwan. Su thanked the United States and Japan for offering Taiwan a helping hand at this critical moment.
