The foreign ministry has welcomed a recent joint statement by the US President Joe Biden and EU backing peace in the Taiwan Strait.
The joint statement was made by US President Joe Biden, President of the European Council Charles Michel, and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen following a US-EU summit. The statement stresses the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and encourages the use of peaceful means to resolve cross-strait issues.
On Wednesday, the foreign ministry said this is the most recent in a string of international statements supporting cross-strait peace made this year. The ministry says this latest statement shows not only a high level of international consensus in favor of cross-strait peace and stability, but also confirms that cross-strait peace is crucial for promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
The foreign ministry says that Taiwan has a key geographical position in the first Asian island chain. It says that Taiwan is not only on the frontlines of defending democracy, freedom, and the rule of law, but also plays a responsible, active, and contributing role in promoting the stability and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region.
The foreign ministry also says that Taiwan will continue contributing to the international community through exchange mechanisms like the Global Cooperation and Training Framework.
The ministry says that Taiwan will continue deepening ties with friends that share its values, defend democracy, freedom, and the rules-based international order, while working with others to safeguard the peace, stability, prosperity, and sustainability of the Indo-Pacific region.
