Taiwan’s foreign ministry has welcomed moves by members of the US Congress to reintroduce the Taiwan Defense Act for consideration. The legislation from Senator Josh Hawley and Representative Mike Gallagher would oblige the US military to maintain its ability to defend Taiwan from potential invasion by China.

The Taiwan Defense Act began as part of a larger group of bills proposed under the China Task Force Act of October last year.

The foreign ministry has responded warmly to the news of the bill’s reintroduction and thanked the US Congress for its support. The ministry says the legislation shows the US Congress’ deep concern for Taiwan’s security, as well as regional peace and stability.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Joanne Ou says the foreign ministry will continue to monitor the bill’s passage through Congress. She says the ministry will remain in close contact with its allies in Congress and the executive branch. Ou says Taiwan will continue working towards greater cooperation with the United States in order to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
