Hushan Dam in the central county of Yunlin has reached full capacity, thanks of the Plum Rain Season this month.
Water, water, everywhere. That’s good news for Hushan Dam, which not too long ago saw water levels drop by over 30% due to a drought at the end of May. But too much water is a headache, too. The reservoir has activated a system to release excess water from the dam, a process that will last for three days.
Hushn Dam director Lee Yen-ren says the dam reached full capacity around 3:00 pm on Wednesday.
The Plum Rain season brings much-needed water, but the volume of water stored by reservoirs in central Taiwan is still a lot less than that of reservoirs in northern and southern Taiwan.
Of the six major reservoirs in Taiwan, water levels at Tsengwen Dam in southwestern Taiwan reached 41.6% of capacity, Feitsui Dam in New Taipei hit 85.1% of capacity, and Shihmen Dam in Taoyuan City reached 58% of capacity.
However, water levels at the Techi Dam, which supplies water to the Greater Taichung area, remain low, at just 28% of capacity. In other words, nearby residents must keep saving water due to water restrictions that remain in place.
