Taiwan’s foreign ministry says it has reached out to local government and rescue crews in Florida after a residential building collapsed near Miami Beach. Thursday’s collapse has left at least one person dead, with many more unaccounted for.
Among those caught up in the event were family members of the First Lady of Paraguay, Silvana López Moreira. Paraguay’s foreign minister has confirmed that Moreira’s sister Sophia Lopez Moreira is unaccounted for, along with her husband, her children, and a domestic worker.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry says it has asked the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami to express its concern to authorities in Florida. It also says Taiwan’s Ambassador to Paraguay José Han has informed Paraguay’s Presidential Office that Taiwan is praying for the safety of the first lady’s family.
The foreign ministry says it has seen the list of people unaccounted for. It says its current understanding is that no Taiwanese citizens have been affected by the collapse. The ministry says it will continue to monitor developments and work to find out how Taiwan can best help with rescue and recovery efforts.
