Miaoli County to lift controversial migrant worker restrictions on June 29
Outbreaks at Miaoli tech firms prompted local authorities to restrict the movements of migrant workers in the county

Miaoli County will lift its controversial migrant worker quarantine restriction on June 29. That comes just over three weeks after Miaoli authorities imposed strict controls on the county’s migrant workers, in response to COVID-19 cluster infections at local tech firms.

The restrictions required migrant workers to remain in their dormitories when not at work. The Taiwan Association for Human Rights (TAHR) called the policy discriminatory. It points out that the rules only applied to migrant workers, despite Taiwanese workers also testing positive for the virus.

Miaoli County Government says that the virus is now under control within the county. It says that expanded testing has shown that there is no community transmission. The county government says that all known migrant worker COVID-19 cases are now in quarantine.

The county government said, however, that migrant workers must still follow the rules set out in the government’s countrywide Level 3 COVID-19 alert. That includes wearing masks outdoors, maintaining social distance, and avoiding gatherings.
