Taiwan’s chances of mass producing Moderna vaccines on the island are not high. That’s the word from the National Health Research Institutes.
Last year, President Tsai Ing-wen visited the National Health Research Institutes, which is a powerhouse for vaccine and drug development.
There are reports that the research body is planning to discuss making Moderna vaccines in Taiwan.
Researcher Liu Chia-chi said it’s nothing unusual to learn from foreign vaccine manufacturers.
Reports were saying that if Taiwan signs an agreement with Moderna, it could make 300 million to 500 million vaccines within six to nine months. But everything is still uncertain. The main issue is whether Taiwan has the ability to mass produce the vaccines.
For now, the institute has a three-pronged strategy for Taiwan’s vaccine needs: local vaccines, foreign-made vaccines, and mass-producing vaccines after receiving authorization from abroad.
