COVID-19 (6/30): Taiwan reports 55 new domestic cases, five deaths

Taiwan reported 55 new domestic cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, including one case of the Delta variant, part of a cluster outbreak in Pingtung County. There was also one imported case and five additional deaths. The new local cases announced on Wednesday began experiencing symptoms between June 20 and June 29. 

The number of new daily cases in Taiwan has been declining since the beginning of the outbreak and Taiwan’s R number, the pace at which an outbreak spreads, has been under one for three weeks in a row.

Health Minister Chen Shih-chung says that 410,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine will arrive Wednesday afternoon. Taiwan has purchased a total of 5.05 million Moderna vaccines.

The Wednesday totals by city and county are as follows: 

New Taipei City: 23

Taipei City: 22

Taoyuan City: 5

Kaohsiung City: 2

Miaoli County: 2

Pingtung County: 1

 

Of the 55 local cases announced on Wednesday, a source is known for 31, the source is unknown for two, and the sources of 22 are being investigated.

Of the five people whose deaths from COVID-19 were announced Wednesday, three were men and two were women. They were aged between 60 and 80 and contracted the disease between May 24 and June 16. Taiwan has seen 648 deaths from COVID-19 since the pandemic began. Meanwhile, 75.6% of patients who contracted COVID-19 between May 11 and June 28 have recovered.
