Taiwan’s government is telling Taiwanese citizens to avoid taking part in political events hosted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). That’s after Taiwanese singer Angela Chang performed at an event in Beijing Tuesday celebrating the 100th anniversary of the party’s founding.

Chang was introduced as representing “Taiwan, China” along with Jackie Chan from “Hong Kong, China”, Liu Nai-qi from “Macau, China” and Chinese singer Sheng Mai. Together they sang a patriotic song called “Protecting the Yellow River”.

Over 20,000 people watched the performance, including party leaders Xi Jinping and the seven members of China’s Politburo Standing Committee

Taiwan’s top China policymaker, the Mainland Affairs Council, says the purpose of that performance was to further Beijing’s claim that Taiwan is a part of China. The council says that Taiwanese citizens should consider their nation’s dignity and how their actions will affect public sentiment before they participate in a Chinese Communist Party event.
