Japan has announced it will donate 1.13 million more doses of the AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccine to Taiwan.

Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi made the announcement at a press conference on Tuesday. He said the vaccines will be delivered on Thursday.

The move came after Tokyo donated 1.24 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines to Taiwan in early June. Japan’s total donation to Taiwan is now 2.37 million doses.

In response, Premier Su Tseng-chang thanked Japan for offering what Taiwan needs urgently at a time when countries around the world are scrambling to get vaccines.

Su said Taiwan’s vaccination rate is about 10%. He urged the public to get jabbed when it’s their turn so that Taiwan will be able to reach herd immunity.
