Seabirds flocking to Taiwan's empty beach to breed

As less people crowd the beaches due to the soft lockdown, a species of bird is happily breeding on a beach in northeastern Taiwan.

A fluffy baby Little Tern is found on the Nan’ao Beach in northern Yilan County. It’s waiting for its mother to bring it food. Now is the breeding season for this particular species of seabirds: Little Tern.

This summer, there is no one on the beach because of the Level 3 COVID alert. Since most people have been staying home, more than a thousand of the seabirds have flocked to the beach this year.

Animal conservationists cordoned off an area with rocks to protect the baby bird they discovered. Students from the National Ilan University even sent a drone to videotape the whole process and patrol the area.

Bird lovers hope that after the pandemic is over, the birds will still come back next year and visitors to the beach will continue to protect the seabirds.
