The foreign ministry has welcomed news of the appointment of Sandra Oudkirk as the new director of the American Institute in Taiwan’s Taipei office.
The American Institute in Taiwan is the de facto US embassy in Taiwan. The institute announced Oudkirk’s appointment on Tuesday, Washington DC time.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Joanne Ou said Wednesday that Taiwan hopes to work closely with Oudkirk’s team at the institute to strengthen bilateral relations.
The foreign ministry says that Oudkirk is a senior diplomat and long-standing friend of Taiwan who has worked closely on issues such as securing Taiwan’s diplomatic ties with its Pacific allies and ensuring Taiwan’s participation in APEC.
