KMT Chairman Johnny Chiang is calling on President Tsai to engage in dialogue with China. That’s after US Indo-Pacific Coordinator Kurt Campbell said that the US does not support Taiwan independence. Cambell made the comments at a talk at the Asia Society think tank on Tuesday.

Chiang said that Campbell’s statement was a reminder to the ruling Democratic Progressive Party and a show of goodwill towards China. Campbell said that the US supports unofficial ties with Taiwan but not Taiwan independence and that the US fully understands the sensitivity of the Taiwan issue.

Chiang said that under President Tsai, cross-strait relations have become too tense and hostile. This has affected the US’s ability to maintain strategic ambiguity to help keep peace and stability in the region. Chiang called on the Tsai government to give up the notion of Taiwan independence and pursue peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. He said Taiwan should engage in dialogue with China and maintain as much autonomy as possible. He said that this would be the most pragmatic and beneficial route for Taiwan.
