Taiwan has extended its condolences to Haiti following the announcement that Haitian President Jovenel Moïse has been assassinated in his residence.
Taiwan’s Presidential Office says that President Tsai Ing-wen has fondly recalled the work of Moïse’s administration to promote deeper bilateral cooperation, as well as Moïse’s repeated support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.
Haiti is one of the 15 countries that maintain full diplomatic relations with Taiwan, and Moïse himself most recently made a state visit to Taiwan in 2018.
The foreign ministry says that all Taiwanese citizens in Haiti are safe, and it expressed hopes for a speedy return to order and normality in the country.
