Taiwan is bracing for the sweltering heat typical of Taiwanese summers. The Central Weather Bureau says that Yunlin, Kaohsiung, Yilan, Pingung, and Hualien are all likely to see temperatures rise to 36 degrees Celsius.
In the traditional calendar, the year is divided into 24 periods called “solar terms”. The period called “moderate heat” started on Wednesday, but the heat has been anything but moderate. And things are likely to heat up even more during the next period, called “intense heat”.
Forecaster Lee Meng-hsuan says that Hualien in eastern Taiwan, and Kaohsiung and Pingtung in the south will see temperatures rise to 36 degrees Celsius. Other areas around Taiwan will also see temperatures between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius.
From Saturday to Tuesday, there will be sporadic rain in eastern Taiwan. Mountainous areas as well as the places to the north of central Taiwan will see afternoon thundershowers. The rain is due to moisture brought by the southeastern wind.
To prevent heatstroke, people are being told to drink water and go to shady areas to lower their body temperature if they begin to feel symptoms like dizziness, vomiting, headache, or blurred vision. See a doctor right away if situation is critical.
