Haitian police have arrested eleven armed people who broke into the grounds of the Taiwanese embassy in Port-au-Prince. The break-in happened early on Thursday, local time, just one day after a similar armed group assassinated Haiti’s president.
No staff were present at the time, because the embassy had been closed as a precautionary measure following the assassination.
Haitian police entered the embassy grounds to carry out the arrests with the embassy’s permission. The armed group did not resist, and the embassy says that the group only did minor damage to the exterior of the embassy building.
Embassy staff are now expected to continue working remotely from their residences until Friday at the least.
