The Ministry of Culture has launched a new YouTube channel dedicated to providing free weekly streams with highlights from Taiwan’s performing arts scene. The Arts Fun Theater initiative is the result of a collaboration with the National Performing Arts Center, the National Taichung Theater, and the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts.

The ministry says it will stream six classic works by Taiwanese performers every weekend from July 10 till August 29. That will include music, dance, traditional opera, contemporary theater, puppetry, and children’s theater. Performances will go out every Saturday and Sunday at 14:30 and 19:30 on the Arts Fun Theater YouTube channel and the channel of each performance group.

Each performance is paid for by the culture ministry and provided to online viewers free of charge.

The culture ministry says it hopes the scheme will bring the performing arts back into people’s daily lives. It also says it hopes to provide support for performance venues as they begin resuming operation following Taiwan’s soft lockdown.

The first weekend’s broadcasts will showcase performances by Dance Forum, Taipei Male Choir, C Musical, Flying Group Theatre, Ming Hwa Yuan Arts and Culture Group, and Shintrun Taiwanese Opera Troupe.
