VIDEO: Farmers worried about influx of tourists brought by daylily season

The eastern county of Hualien is known for its beautiful orange daylilies, particularly in Yuli township and Fuli village. However, farmers there are worried about the influx of tourists due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  

August is the season for orange daylilies in Hualien’s Yuli township and Fuli village. The bright orange flowers are gorgeous under the sunshine and a big draw for tourists.

One visitor says she is looking forward to seeing the sea of daylilies. Another guy says the flowers are so pretty.

But farmers have their concerns. After all, the COVID-19 pandemic is not over yet.

One farmer is worried about the impact of large gatherings. 0036-0043 Another says old people have been vaccinated, but young people haven’t and most tourists are young people.

Out of safety concerns, a farmers’ association head, Tsai Tsung-han, says there will be crowd controls next month. All marketing campaigns will also be moved online including drawings for prizes.
