Taiwan’s bananas are going to the Olympics! On Friday, Council of Agriculture Minister Chen Chi-chung said that Taiwanese bananas have been chosen for the first time as one of the fruits that will be served to Olympic athletes.
In total, five metric tons of bananas from Pingtung County in Taiwan’s far south will be served to athletes from around the world once the games begin.
For the 66-member strong Taiwanese contingent taking part, the bananas will be a welcome taste of home and a reminder of all those back home cheering them on. This year, Taiwan will be represented in 18 sports: shooting, track and field, archery, swimming, gymnastics, table tennis, equestrian, boxing, rowing, canoeing, weightlifting, judo, tennis, badminton, taekwondo, karate, cycling, and golf.
