Kaohsiung is famous for its golden Jinhuang mangoes. Though export orders this year have gone down because of COVID-19, the mango farmers have managed to survive thanks to local support.
May to August is the season for Kaohsiung’s golden Jinhuang mangoes. During the harvest, farm workers dress in full gear, picking the fruit, then cleaning and packaging it for export.
In the past, about 90% of the harvest was shipped to Canada and Singapore. But this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, exports to Canada fell by 2%.
Thanks to help from farmers’ associations and Kaohsiung’s Agriculture Department, though, Kaohsiung farmers were able to develop different marketing channels online to promote their mangoes. They even started using taxi couriers to send the fruit to local buyers. Thanks to added support from local mango lovers, the farmers have been able to overcome the difficulties they faced because of the pandemic.
