Taiwanese weightlifter Kuo Hsing-chun won Taiwan’s first gold at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday and set Olympic records in the women's 59kg weight class at the same time.
The 27-year-old Kuo won with a combined lift of 236 kilograms - 103 kg. in the snatch and 133 kg. in the clean and jerk, which was 21 kg. more than runner-up Polina Guryeva of Turkmenistan.
Kuo set three Olympic records with her lifts.
In the last Olympics in Rio, Kuo was lifting while injured and won the bronze.
Taiwan now has five medals - one gold, two silver and two bronze medals in Tokyo.
Taiwan won silver in men’s archery and men’s judo and bronzes in mixed table tennis and women’s Taekwondo.
Taiwan has 68 athletes competing in 18 events at the Tokyo Olympics.
Weightlifting is one of Taiwan’s top Olympic sports. It has won nine Olympic medals in weightlifting.
The country has also won nine medals in Taekwondo since 2000, when the sport became a part of the Olympic Games.
