The health ministry says Taiwan’s COVID-19 vaccination rate has reached 30% due to the arrival of vaccines doses and their wider availability. The ministry made the statement at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday.

The health ministry was referring to the percentage of people who have received their first dose of a COVID vaccine.

In light of an upward trend in infections worldwide, however, Taiwan’s tightened border controls will remain in place for the time being. The health ministry is concerned that the world might see more new cases of COVID-19 because of the Tokyo Olympics, religious festivals in some countries, as well as mass travel during the northern hemisphere’s summer season.

The health ministry says the COVID-19 outbreak in Taiwan is under control with no fatalities reported in the past few days. Still, there are sporadic cases with an unclear origin that require investigation.

To keep the pandemic at bay, the health ministry has put a priority on contact-tracing, medical care and vaccination.
