President backs plan for Lee Teng-hui Memorial Library
President Tsai’s backing comes after the Lee Tung-hui Foundation called for the establishment of a memorial library at a press conference on Thursday.

President Tsai Ing-wen says she is in favor of establishing a library to commemorate former President Lee Teng-hui. Lee oversaw the end of martial law in Taiwan in 1988, and is widely regarded as the father of Taiwan’s democracy.

President Tsai’s backing comes after the Lee Tung-hui Foundation called for the establishment of a memorial library at a press conference on Thursday. Friday will mark the one-year anniversary of Lee’s death.

Presidential Office Spokesperson Xavier Chang says Lee was well-known in the international community and made an outstanding contribution to Taiwan’s democratic transition.

Chang says President Tsai is in favour of plans to establish the library at the old law library of National Taiwan University on Xuzhou Road. However, he says the plan would need agreement from university authorities. If the plan goes ahead, Chang says government departments will give their full support.

Chang says President Tsai and Vice President William Lai will pay their respects tomorrow at Lee’s grave in the Wuzhi Mountain Military Cemetery.
