The last Taiwanese official at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Hong Kong is set to leave on Friday as his visa expires. This final staffer is Ni Bo-chia of the office’s commercial department. The reason his visa extension was turned down was because he refused to sign an affidavit issued by the Hong Kong government recognizing Beijing’s ‘one China’ policy.
In June, the same thing happened to seven other Taiwanese staff at the same office. They have since returned to Taiwan.
Sources say that future basic operations of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Hong Kong will be handled by local staff members.
