Taiwan’s badminton star Tai Tzu-ying won a silver at the Olympics on Sunday evening, finally achieving her goal of winning an Olympic medal.

China’s Chen Yufei won the gold in a close 81-minute match: 21-18, 19-21, 21-18.

This is Tai’s first Olympic medal and also Taiwan’s second Olympic medal in badminton. Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin won the gold in men's doubles badminton on Saturday.

Tai's medal is Taiwan's tenth medal at the Olympics. Taiwan has already doubled its previous record of five medals and will see more to come as boxer Huang Hsiao-wen is set to win a medal as well.

Tai, 27, is a native of Kaohsiung and began playing badminton with her parents in elementary school. She became the world’s number one ranked badminton player in December 2016 and holds the Badminton World Federation’s record for most weeks at number one.
