A US lawmaker is calling on the international community to allow Taiwan to use its national flag and anthem at international games. Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska made the comments in a post on Twitter on Monday, congratulating Taiwan for a gold medal in men’s doubles badminton.
Due to pressure from China, Taiwan’s Olympic team must compete under the name “Chinese Taipei”. It also cannot use its national flag or national anthem.
In his post on Twitter, Bacon calls Taiwan a “friend” of the United States and says the US should “stop appeasing the Communist Government in Beijing”. The tweet includes a link to a New York Times article that describes tensions between Chinese and Taiwanese internet users over Taiwan’s gold in badminton.
