Foreign Minister Joseph Wu says China is using the COVID-19 pandemic to change the global order. Wu called for democracies around the world to stand together in an interview with German news group RND broadcast on Tuesday.
Wu says that Germany and Taiwan share common values. He says the two countries are working together to uphold democracy, freedom, and human rights worldwide.
Wu is praising Germany’s decision to send a warship to the South China Sea for the first time in almost two decades. He says that the move is in line with the German government’s guidelines for the Indo-Pacific region. Wu says it also sends a positive message to like-minded countries such as Taiwan.
Wu says joint statements at a number of high-profile summits have affirmed the importance of peace in the Taiwan Strait. That includes statements by the Group of Seven (G7) political forum and NATO. Germany is a member of both organizations.
Joseph Wu is thanking the German government for speaking up for Taiwan and supporting Taiwan’s participation in international organizations such as the World Health Organization.
Wu says Taiwan will continue to promote freedom and democracy around the world.
