Huang Hsiao-wen won an Olympic bronze medal in boxing in the 48-51kg flyweight category, clinching Taiwan’s first Olympic medal in the sport.
Huang had lost in the semifinals on Wednesday to the world’s number two boxer, Buse Naz Cakiroglu of Turkey. Huang lost to Cakiroglu by a unanimous 5-0 decision.
This was Huang’s first time competing at the Olympics.
On Sunday, she defeated Serbian boxer Nina Radovanovic with a score of 5:0.
Huang is currently a student at Fu Jen Catholic University. She began boxing in junior high school. Huang, who is 176cm tall, originally wanted to be a basketball player, but there were no openings in that sport, so her coach encouraged her to try boxing.
She won a gold at the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships in the bantamweight (54kg) category. In the past five years, she has competed at the flyweight (51kg), the bantamweight (54kg) and the featherweight (57kg) categories.
