Taiwan’s most popular horror films will be featured as part of the New York Asian Film Festival during Ghost Month.
In traditional Chinese culture, the seventh month according to the lunar calendar is known as Ghost Month. It is a time when ghosts and spirits are thought to enter the realm of the living.
This year, Ghost Month runs from August 8 till September 6.
The festival’s Taiwan Ghost Month Series 2021 will begin on August 23 and run for 10 days.
New York Asian Film Festival Executive Director Samuel Jamier says that Asian films have “helped forge the gold standard of horror.” He says Taiwan’s horror films “have been a major force to be reckoned with in the past few years.”
The films on show have been praised for intertwining Taiwanese folk tradition, Chinese mythology, modern social issues and historical tragedies into their chilling stories.
The seven films in the series are Detention, Get the Hell Out, The Heirloom, Mon Mon Mon Monsters, The Rope Curse, Silk and the Tag-A-long.
