The foreign ministry says that Taiwan is already offering medical aid and assisting with relief efforts for Haiti in the wake of a major earthquake on Saturday.
A 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti on Saturday evening, leaving at least 1,200 dead and over 5,000 injured. The numbers of deaths and casualties are expected to rise in the coming days.
The Haitian government says it hopes that Taiwan can help by providing supplies to resettle survivors and offering medical support.
Haiti and Taiwan are close allies with full diplomatic relations.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry said on Tuesday that Taiwan’s embassy in Haiti and the Haitian government continue to discuss assistance plans. It says the two countries are finding ways to meet Haiti’s needs.
President Tsai Ing-wen has expressed her condolences to all the Haitian people affected by the earthquake in a post on Twitter. She says Taiwan stands ready to assist Haiti in rescue and recovery efforts.
