The National Security Adviser to US President Joe Biden says that the US pull-out from Afghanistan has no bearing on the United States’ continued commitment to Taiwan.

The US military’s withdrawal from Afghanistan has renewed discussion on the United States’ willingness to defend Taiwan in the face of increasing Chinese aggression. The leaders of Taiwan’s main opposition party have used the US retreat from Afghanistan as a warning about what might happen if Taiwan needed US help.

However, during a White House press briefing, Biden security adviser Jake Sullivan said that Taiwan is a “fundamentally different question in a different context” when compared to Afghanistan. He said that the US commitment to Taiwan “remains as strong as it's ever been.”
