Recent whispers indicate that Taiwan may soon receive 1.5 to 2 million doses of the Pfizer-BNT vaccine by the end of August.
Foxconn Founder Terry Gou gives the media a smile, wave, salute, and even makes a heart with his hands. Gou has just returned from Europe, where it’s said he went to expedite orders for the Pfizer-BNT vaccine.
Gou is part of a private sector effort to secure and donate COVID-19 vaccine doses to Taiwan. The group has secured a deal for 15 million doses of the vaccine, but a concrete delivery date has yet to surface. Now, initial reports indicate that Taiwan may receive 1.5 to 2 million doses of the vaccine at the end of August, which is next week. Furthermore, the same reports say that Taiwan will receive 7.5 million doses in total by the end of November.
However, Amanda Liu, CEO of Foxconn’s Yonglin Education Foundation — which spearheads the donation effort —says that official announcements will be made in accordance with government policy.
When asked about the vaccines, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung simply said that shipments will arrive periodically in the following days.
As Taiwan gets more vaccines, the country won’t just stave off COVID-19, it’ll be keeping away the people’s collective coronavirus anxiety.
