At the Paralympics opening ceremony on Tuesday, NHK Anchorwoman Sugiura Yuki introduced the Taiwanese team as being from “Taiwan”.
That was significant because Taiwan has to compete in the Paralympics under the name Chinese Taipei due to pressure from China.
For both the Olympics and Paralympics, NHK introduced Taiwan’s team as being from “Taiwan”. It then explained that Taiwanese athletes compete under the official name “Chinese Taipei”.
Taiwan’s representative to Japan, Frank Hsieh, noted that NHK hasn’t given into political pressure from China in this respect. He also noted that Taiwan won twelve medals at the Olympics, including two gold medals. This is Taiwan’s best Olympic performance to date.
