Foreign ministry official Tsui Ching-lin says that more work is needed before Taiwan can accept Afghan refugees. The recent Taliban takeover of much of Afghanistan has created a wave of Afghans attempting to flee their country.
However, Tsui said Thursday that discussions between various government ministries and agencies will be needed before Taiwan can take in any refugees from Afghanistan. Tsui also said that Taiwan’s refugee law is not yet completely formulated.
Tsui said, however, that Taiwan’s government will cooperate with any proposals on handling the Afghan refugee situation put forward by friendly nations and the international community at large.
Meanwhile on Thursday, the chief of the foreign ministry’s Department of NGO International Affairs, Constance H. Wang, said that some aid from Taiwanese charitable organizations is on its way to Haiti, which is recovering from a recent 7.2 magnitude earthquake.
