Italian magazines support Taiwan entry to UN
The UN chief secretary Antonio Guterres (right) says that the UN and Taiwan would both benefit from the country's inclusion.

Two major Italian magazines have published a letter from Taiwan's foreign ministry that calls for Taiwan's admittance to the UN. In the letter, published by Affaritaliani and TFNews, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu says that Taiwan is barred from the UN because of pressure from China.

This restriction also prevents tourists from entering the UN with their Taiwanese passports and bars Taiwanese reporters from attending activities hosted by the UN. Wu says that tensions between China and Taiwan are growing, and worries that Taiwan's position may be in danger after President Tsai Ing-wen leaves office. Tsai is a member of the Democratic Progressive Party, which is wary of Beijing.

Wu says that blocking Taiwan from UN membership is a loss to both Taiwan and the UN.

He says Taiwan is willing to help the world tackle COVID-19, especially issues stemming from the Delta variant. He also writes about Taiwan's success in managing the pandemic, including an outbreak that emerged in May. At the same time, Wu says that Taiwan has donated essential medical supplies and millions of masks to many countries, showing that it is committed to being a team player in the international community.
