President Tsai Ing-wen has thanked the United States for its support of Taiwan during a speech at the New York Mets’ annual Taiwan Day match.
The Mets, a US Major League Baseball team, held their yearly match in support of the local Taiwanese community on Sunday.
President Tsai addressed the crowd through a pre-recorded speech shown on the stadium’s big screen, saying she was pleased to welcome fans back after a year away. The Taiwan Day match in 2020 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tsai says the match is an opportunity to celebrate Taiwan, the Taiwanese-American community, and everything Taiwan and the United States have in common.
Tsai is thanking the United States for its donation of 2.5 million COVID-19 vaccine doses in June this year. She says the shots have gone a long way to protecting Taiwan and its people.
President Tsai also thanked Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Hsiao Bi-khim, for her and her colleagues’ work promoting Taiwan in the US.
