Weightlifter Kuo Hsing-chun won Taiwan’s first gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, setting a new Olympic record in the process. But she’s not only great in what she does, she also has a great heart for doing charity.
Kuo Hsing-chun was born in Taitung, eastern Taiwan. She came from a not so well off family with indigenous Amis descent. Kuo resorted to winning awards in weightlifting and scholarships to support her family. In fact, she did so well that she became part of Taiwan’s national team in her sophomore year in high school. She started making headlines in international sports events while she was still young.
But not only is Kuo great in her sport, she also has a kind heart for helping those in need. She is known for her charitable work, including donating an ambulance to the hospital of her alma mater, the Fu Jen Catholic University. Kuo once said life is not about winning every competition. She said it is about how many people you help along the way.
Kuo says she thought of giving up when she succumbed many times to injury and failures. It was perseverance that made her get to where she is today.
