Foreign Minister Joseph Wu has congratulated the Central American nation of Belize on the 40th anniversary of its independence from the UK. Belize is one of nine countries in the Americas that maintain full diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
During a phone call Thursday with Belizean Prime Minister John Briceño, Wu said that Belize is an important ally to Taiwan in the Central American and Caribbean region. He said that Taiwan will continue to promote exchanges between the people of Taiwan and Belize, as well as bilateral friendship.
In addition, he said that Taiwan will do all it can to cooperate with Belize’s government, promote projects that benefit the people of both sides, fight COVID-19 alongside Belize, and promote economic recovery and development in Belize.
Wu thanked Belize’s political parties for their longstanding support for Taiwan’s inclusion in international organizations, and he invited Briceño to come to Taiwan once the COVID-19 pandemic is under control.
